FAQ

Frequently Asked Hardwood Floor Questions

  • How do I make my hardwood floors look shiny again?

You can restore a dull floor finish without refinishing the floor. However, some hardwood floor manufacturers recommend that only professional flooring refinishers handle the project.

  • What advice can you offer me when shopping for new flooring?

The feel, look, and even the sound - of a floor are all important factors to consider. Some other factors to think about include:

    • Longevity: Can the wood floor be refinished, and if it can, how many times can that be done?
    • Strength: Will the floor handle everyday life? Hardwood floors certainly will. Pro basketball courts use maple floors because they can withstand high impact.
    • Installation and Preservation: Will the new flooring pose any unique challenges? Is the flooring easy to maintain?
    • Price: Inexpensive flooring will need to be replaced often. Hardwood floors can last a lifetime.
    • Sustainability: American hardwoods are renewable, sustainable, and environmentally beneficial.
    • Health: Physicians often suggest hardwood floors when patients suffer from dust and pet dander allergies.
  • Is it possible to stain a new hardwood floor to match the old wood floors in my home now?

No one can match color finishes seamlessly, but our experienced hardwood flooring professionals can get close. It is best to refinish the old floor with the same finish and sheen as the new floor for optimal results.

  • Is hardwood flooring a suitable choice for someone with allergies or asthma?

Yes, it is. Allergists often recommend hardwood because it reduces the chance for dust, animal dander, pollen, or molds. Respiratory specialists say as many as one-fifth of the U.S. population experiences breathing complications caused by allergies and asthma, often triggered by tiny dust mites that hide in bedding, curtains, and carpets. You can wash bedding and curtains, but frequent vacuuming is ineffective against dust mites in floor coverings. Many immunologists and allergists suggest hardwood floors for these reasons.

  • Do steam cleaners effectively clean hardwood floors?

Some steam cleaning models are designed for use on hardwood floors, and others are not. It's best to check with the manufacturer to determine if your cleaner is suitable for use on your wood floor. Keep in mind, water damages wood. If your flooring is worn or scratched, steam could trickle into your wood floors, ultimately causing damage. To clean wood floors, wipe up any spills quickly with a soft, dry cloth. Regularly sweep floors with a broom, dust mop, or canister vacuum with hardwood floor attachments. Do not use a vacuum with beater bars. They can dent your floor's finish.
